Collection: Lusid Coily Hair

What is coily hair?

Coily hair is super voluminous hair that forms tight curls in a zig-zag pattern from the scalp. The difference between curly and coily hair is coily hair has more defined ringlets, increased volume, and often a fuller body. Coily curls are more fragile than other hair textures. Coily hair requires special care and attention because it typically struggles to absorb moisture, making it extremely prone to breakage.

Tips for looking after coily hair

1) Avoid products with mineral oils and silicones

Mineral oils and silicone coat the hair shaft and prevent moisture from entering, leaving strands of hair brittle and dry. Mineral oils clog the scalp and prevent healthy hair growth. Watch out for products with ingredients that end in "-one", "-xane", "-onol".

2) Look after your scalp.

You may not need to shampoo as frequently as the other hair types but DO clean your scalp. Generally, if your scalp is feeling a bit on the itchy side, it's time to remove the buildup with a double shampoo. We recommend using our Lusid Orange Shampoo bar as it is rich with cocoa butter specifically for looking after fragile coils. Play around with trial and error to figure out a shampoo frequency that works best for your hair.

3) Use hair products that are highly moisturizing!

Feed your hair water, it needs moisture. This doesn't mean you need to shampoo frequently it just doesn't deprive it of hydration.

4) Use conditioner frequently

Co-wash your hair daily if you have thirsty coils. Deep condition weekly if required. We recommend using our Lusid Red Conditioner Bar which contains cacao butter for extreme hydration for thirsty curls. However, if your hair coils are on the finer side, you could alternatively try our Lusid Yellow Conditioner bar to hydrate without weighing your curls down. If you have long hair we recommend converting your bar to a liquid conditioner. You can also use your Lusid Red Conditioner Bar and Lusid Smoothing Serum to make your own Deep Conditioning treatment.

5) Detangle wet hair

Gently comb through hair ends when wet to prevent breakages. We recommend using our Lusid Leave-In conditioner to help detangle fragile coils. Work your way from the bottom up, combing gently in a downward direction only.

6) Curl Magic

If you are wanting killer coils to give everyone curl envy we recommend using our Lusid Curl Defining Creme Gel. Made from flaxseed to help give curl definition but also has aloe vera to hydrate and fights the frizz. A must-have for any curl friend. For those with light coils, you could alternatively try our Curl Defining Foaming Mousse which has a lightweight formula to not weigh your curls down.

7) Protect your coils

Style your hair in twists, braids, buns, or any way that will protect your coils as they dry.  Air dry or diffuse to protect from heat damage. Sleep with a satin or silk pillow, bonnet, or scarf to keep hair from getting tangled. Add a drop of Lusid Smoothing Serum to your hair before you go to sleep. Although it won't help with hydration, it will help to lock in the moisture while you sleep so your coils can wake up happy.
